1L Reading Group: The System and Storytelling in the Serial Podcast

Course Description

The Serial podcast told the story of the murder accusation against Adnan Syed. Although popular interest focused primarily on the did-he-or-didn't-he angle, our reading group will explore other dimensions of the story. We will study the podcast for what it teaches us about contemporary issues in criminal justice -- like the practice of "flipping" witnesses, the reliability of forensic evidence, the application of the reasonable doubt standard, the quality of counsel, and so on. We will also consider what the podcast tells us about the relationship between the media and criminal justice, and how popular narratives can enhance or compromise public understanding about salient criminal justice issues.
